Day 1: Saturday 22 November
Christchurch to Marlborough via Kaikōura
Departing in the early morning and travel in comfort by coach* along the scenic Kaikōura coast to the Marlborough region. Hear firsthand about the Kaikōura earthquake response and the remediation that followed before visiting Haldon Dam which required significant post-earthquake repairs. Wind down with dinner at a local winery to sample some of the world-famous Marlborough wines and settle in for an overnight stay in Blenheim.
Day 2: Sunday 23 November
Marlborough to Nelson via Nelson Lakes
Explore the Branch River Power Scheme, a key hydroelectric system nestled in the scenic Wairau Valley that utilises run-of-river intakes to deliver reliable power. Enjoy a scenic lunch at Nelson Lakes National Park, followed by a visit to the recently constructed Waimea Community Dam – a 53m high concrete facing rockfill dam and the largest dam to be built in New Zealand for 30 years. Spend the night in Nelson and enjoy some of the city’s charming restaurants at your leisure.**
Day 3: Monday 24 November
Departure Options
Fly out of Nelson Airport (at your own cost), or travel by coach back to Christchurch, enjoying the South Island landscapes on your way back via Lewis Pass.***
